In southern China’s Guangxi region, heavy rainfall triggered by Typhoon Maysak caused severe flooding. On July 6, the Liulan Reservoir embankment breached, inundating low-lying areas including Dengwei village in Hengzhou. The floodwaters destroyed a snake breeding farm, allowing approximately 800 to 900 snakes to escape into the surrounding areas. Among the escaped reptiles were venomous cobras, along with king rat snakes and non-venomous water snakes.

Local authorities confirmed that at least one villager was bitten by a snake and is receiving hospital treatment. Rescue teams and volunteers have been deployed to capture the escaped snakes using nets and electric tools. Most of the snakes captured so far are non-venomous, but officials warned residents not to approach or catch them themselves and to report any sightings immediately.

The incident has added to the challenges of the ongoing flood disaster. Antivenom stocks have been increased, temporary medical stations set up, and emergency response teams are working in the affected zones. Videos of snakes swimming through floodwaters have spread widely on social media, causing concern among locals.

The broader flooding from Typhoon Maysak has led to multiple deaths, missing persons, and large-scale evacuations across the region. Chinese authorities have raised emergency alerts and are carrying out extensive rescue and relief operations in the impacted areas.
